Our wonderful Debbi Lawrence sets new goal for 2008!

Debbi Lawrence is as busy as ever with her AIM business that she operates with her husband, Don, in Wisconsin. She keeps an active walking and training schedule, and is also revising her book, Walk Log: Diary and Guide for the Exercise Walker (©1991).

But, that’s not all. Debbi is also keeping her eye toward the 2008 Olympics! With Don’s encouragement and support, Debbi has made the commitment to train for and compete in the women’s 20km at the national and world-championship levels. Her goal is to make the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

As you may recall, Debbi was a member of the 1992 Olympic Team in the inaugural women’s 10km racewalk. In 1991, she won the silver medal at the Pan AM Games, and since then, has broken the American record several times at various racewalking distances. Debbi established the world’s fastest indoor time at the metric mile, and to her credit, has won several U.S. National Racewalk Championships. She has represented the U.S. in numerous international competitions.
In 2004, however, disappointment set in when severe food allergies and extreme fatigue kept Debbi from making the 2004 Olympic Team. As with many athletes, this personal setback has sparked a renewed competitive spirit in Debbi. “I still have it in me, and I still have unfinished goals.”

Debbi is back on track with her nutritional program—purging of all things, licorice from her diet. Says Debbi, “I found this year that you really have to watch your diet!” She remains serious about her weight training and is attempting to build muscle mass to increase her competitiveness.

“There’s so much I’ve learned in the past year,” says Debbi. A balanced lifestyle with good nutrition is just one of them. She also remains determined to compete in a sport with women much younger in age. “Age is just a number as long as your cells are healthy.” Sometimes, she adds, “God puts in these little pauses for me. I’ve had some definite down years, but I just renew my health and come back fresh.”
